Dr Oz Goes Down

John Oliver Obliterates Dr. Oz: The Worst Person Ever on TV in Scrubs, Including Katherine Heigl.

The brilliantly droll host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight tore the embattled Dr. Oz to shreds.

Last year, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver dedicated a 16-minute segment on his half-hour HBO show to examining Dr. Oz’s propensity for recommending highly dubious dietary supplements.

Oliver’s not done with misleading Mehmet.

On Sunday night’s episode, the brash Brit focused his entertaining ire on Mehmet Oz, the controversial host of daytime television program Dr. Oz, once more. It was, of course, pegged to Oz’s ubiquity in the news of late, from being grilled by a Senate committee to a comprehensive study by the British Medical Journal that claimed evidence only supported 46 percent of his televised recommendations, contradicted 15 percent, and wasn’t available for 39 percent.

And most recently, 10 of his fellow physicians published a signed open letter demanding his dismissal from the faculty of the Columbia University Medical School, citing his “egregious lack of integrity by promoting quack treatments.” Dr. Oz fired back against his critics on his show this past week.
“You are the worst person in scrubs who has ever been on television—and I’m including Katherine Heigl in that. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to be worse than Katherine Heigl?”

“Dr. Oz spent much of the episode attacking the doctors who’d called for his resignation, arguing that industry ties were behind their criticism—which might be true, may well be true—but none of that answers the substance of the accusations: that he’s a quack who serves viewers horseshit dressed up as medicine, and his response to that has been pathetic,” Oliver said on Last Week.

Indeed, Dr. Oz conducted a bizarre interview withNBC News saying that since the ‘OZ’ is big and in the center of the show’s logo and the ‘Dr.’ is in smaller type at the upper-right, his 2 million-plus viewers should realize that “it’s not a medical show.”

Soak that doozy in. But, according to Oliver, the “weakest” of Dr. Oz’s “flimsy pushbacks” was the following statement he made on his Dr. Oz show defending himself: “No matter our disagreements, freedom of speech is the most fundamental right we have as Americans, and these ten doctors are trying to silence that right.”

Cue epic Oliver rant:

“No. You are scientifically wrong about that as you are about so many things. Let’s be clear: The First Amendment protects Americans against government censorship, and that’s it. It does not guarantee you to simultaneously hold a faculty position at a prestigious private university and make misleading claims on a TV show. It absolutely protects you to say whatever you like on it, just as it protects my right to say what I think about you on mine, which is this: You are the worst person in scrubs who has ever been on television—and I’m including Katherine Heigl in that. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to be worse than Katherine Heigl? You are also the admittedly handsome ringmaster of a middling mid-afternoon snake-oil dispensary and it says something that even when you do a show with seven fake models of human feces, the biggest piece of shit on the stage has his name in the title.”

Oliver concluded his hilarious takedown of Dr. Oz with a fitting sign-off: “Isn’t freedom of speech great?”

Abandoned Animals in Abdally

Camping season is over, the camp has been partly dismantled and the animals have been abandoned and are left out in the sun. When is Kuwait going to make owners accountable for the welfare of their animals? It is not okay just to leave animals to die. If you want more info call 99861836.

Wishing One of My Real Life Heroes, Dr Naif Al-Mutawa, The Best of Luck in the Heresy Case

The Dumb Fish in the Desert by Naif Al-Mutawa

After completing my graduate education in New York City, armed with a doctorate in clinical psychology and an MBA, I was toying with the idea of staying in New York and not moving back to Kuwait. I didn’t share that with anyone but didn’t have to. My mother’s spider sense tingled. A family member called to express her concerns and told me that I could go from being a small fish in a big pond to being a big fish in a small pond. My response? What happens if I become the dumb fish in the desert? Then what?

I moved back in June 2003 and launched THE 99 which I took from being an idea in a London Cab to global television and along the way raised millions of dollars and created the first ever IP from the Muslim World to go global thereby putting Kuwait on the global cultural and entrepreneurial map. And in recognition of that contribution, I have recently been selected as a member of the Investment and Finance Committee of Kuwait’s new 7 Billion Dollar National Fund for small and medium sized businesses. Also in recognition of that, I am being sued for heresy and insult to religion by a private citizen.

On Thursday, April 23rd, a verdict will be shared as to whether I have indeed insulted religion through THE 99 or not. The case has been brought upon me by a gentleman whose Twitter posts and retweets speak volumes to who he really is. Look him up and read his content. I don’t have to say anything more. In a fascinating case of reaction formation he has projected onto me that I am insulting religion. It’s quite trippy. Lewis Carroll would have loved to create such a character.

When he first lodged his complaint in February 2014, I was not called in for questioning. Four months later he found a relative at a police station in a remote area of Kuwait to accept to call me in for questioning. The evidence? A tweet that someone else tweeted from an unverified anonymous account accusing me of insulting religion. That is the evidence. That is the case. He then fortified it by a Fatwa asking a question based on lies and allegations. And this is the basis for most of the cases this lawyer drums up. Imagine if all lawyers did the same thing? They would collectively sink Kuwait and its future.

There has been concern from certain camps asking me to leave Kuwait when the verdict is read and not be there. And I find myself thinking, really? Now? After putting up this fight for a decade? The time to be out of Kuwait was in 2003. I refuse to be diluted out of my country’s future.

So, will I be at the courtroom when the verdict is read? No. I will not. Will I be out of Kuwait? No, I will not. I will be at the Kuwait University’s Faculty of Medicine administering an OSCE exam to future doctors and then I will be giving a lecture in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, also at the Faculty of Medicine. So if the result of the trial is not in my favor, they know where to find me.

On Thursday, April 23rd, it will be decided who the dumb fish in the desert is, and if it is not me, I will be working diligently on how to make sure things like this never happen again, not just for me but for anyone who can get caught up in such an unfair scenario where someone can bend and break the truth for personal gain citing unverified anonymous tweets as evidence in a courtroom. Any ideas you may have are welcome.

The gentleman suing me wants fame on my behalf. He wants to be a Big Fish by swallowing me. This trial will highlight what kind of sea Kuwait is and what kind of fish he is. I hope it’s neither big nor small. And if it is neither, let’s give him the fame he is looking for.

LWDLIK - Just a little bump in the road. The more often these ludicrous allegations/behaviours are outed and done away with the quicker we can get on with progress. But a counter suit for slander might be most satisfying.

I do believe the UK heresy law was repealed in the Middle Ages.

 Inline image 2

Kuwait Society for the Protection of Animals & Their Habitat's Marine Conservation Program aims to address Kuwait's bio-diversity issues such as migratory birds, habitat protection, waste impact, environmentally friendly practices & other aspects of marine conservation through education & advocacy, community engagement, conservation activities & co-operation with authorities.

Kuwait's critical areas that are in need of conservation stretch along the bay of Kuwait which is an ecologically rich zone, as well as the islands of Failaka, Umm Almaradin, Kubbar & Garoh. These areas are rich in marine life, coral reef & serve as natural nesting & flocking grounds for migratory birds & turtles. They also see high concentration of waste which pollutes these natural habitats & threatens the lives of many marine birds and fish.

Nadia Al-Sharhan has been the Director of Education at K'S PATH since September 2014. She also oversees the Marine Conservation Program & leads the monthly beach cleanups which run from September to April (weather permitting).

Review: Bayt Ahmed, Souk Al Mubarakiya (Heritage Souk)

A nice leisurely wander around - after a hearty Arabic breakfast - in Souk Mubarakiya is always a fun, colourful, interesting time. A quick visit to Mubarak Al Kabeer Kiosk museum and then an introduction to the sweetest little coffee shop/artisan curio shop, called Bayt Ahmed. First class coffee and sweets and a wonderful loo (not always easy to find in the Souk) they even had Jo Malone hand soap.

We loved the quirky, artisan atmosphere and shopping. It's an interestingly whimsical yet serene and female-friendly spot to sit and enjoy a great cup of coffee or mint tea.

Thank you ladies for your excellent company.

Indoor/outdoor seating

The menu; there's one is English too.

Part of our order

Super coffee

Fresh flowers, trinkets and cake.

Unusual, delightful one-off pieces.

Love this. Without the a/c control of course.

Irresistible cake.

All photos were taken in Bayt Ahmed which is located in the city (Souk Al Mubarakiya) across the road from ABK bank.

Hope the map helps. Kim marks the spot. If you have ABK bank behind you and you are facing the Heritage Souk carpet shops and next to Evergreen Vegetarian restaurant you will find Bayt Ahmed behind the carpet shops.

Warning for Animal Owners in Kuwait

KUWAIT ANIMAL OWNERS BEWARE THERE IS CREDIBLE INFO THAT POISON IS SOON TO BE PUT DOWN AGAIN!

Carry soda crystals to make your dog sick, stay clear of trash bins. Ace Hardware have muzzles.

A very cruel way of trying to solve the problem of stray dogs and feral/abandoned cats. It's a very slow and excruciatingly painful death for the animal. Please be extra diligent.
