The C word - Help is Available for Cancer Sufferers in Kuwait at KCCC

How many of you know somebody who has been diagnosed with cancer?

I'm betting that most of you do.

In our society, cancer is a taboo subject.  People don't like to mention it because it’s immediately considered to be a death sentence.

Good news: It doesn't have to be.

The #1 tool to fighting cancer is awareness.  Awareness leads to early detection. Early detection leads to prevention. But above all the most important thing is to be informed and educated on the subject so we can fight the battle together.

The University Health Network signed an agreement with the Ministry Of Health in the State of Kuwait in September 8, 2010, to provide clinical expertise to Kuwait Cancer Control Center (KCCC) and strengthen cancer service delivery at the KCCC by focusing on areas such as radiation medicine, medical oncology, surgical oncology and laboratory medicine. The University Health Network is a teaching and academic health science center and one of the largest medical research centers in Canada.

UHN and KCCC have sat down together and have launched the first portal related to cancer care in Kuwait.  It will serve as a educational tool and informative platform to help educate patients and their families about the cancer journey as well as ways to:
  • Inform about the public about the latest news related to the center
  • Provide department details and initiatives
  • Offer important facts about the population in Kuwait related to cancer prevention, care and treatment
  • Find out about patient and cancer support services
  • Find out ways you can help/volunteer
The best part about this is that this is the first time information like this is available in Kuwait in Arabic and English.

 www.kuwaitcancercenter.com

Share this info and show your support and do your part to help enhance cancer treatment and better educate the people of Kuwait on what the Ministry of Health is doing to better and strengthen cancer care and delivery in the community.

Bengal Tiger Cubs For Sale on Supermarket Bulletin Board

Found this and more on my favourite animal protection warrior's blog www.HumansandAnimals.com and the [link] to this story.

Does no one care that these dangerous, beautiful endangered animals are being bred and driven around in cars or taken to Khubar Island on boats? I'm speechless.

Summer Camps in Kuwait 2013

DASMANite summer camp for Kids that will be held at the Fitness and Rehabilitation Center in Dasman Diabetes Institute. This is a 3 week summer program that DDI have made that will teach children 11-17 how to make better nutrition choices, how to cook healthy meals, how to read nutrition labels and choose wisely when dining outside. Also, the classes will include fitness classes of all sorts (Zumba, Kickboxing, Dance, Running, etc) and basic first aid. Although we have stated that only overweight or obese kids can join, we have increased that to also include other children in order to stop the epidemic of obesity early on.

The program offers group nutrition classes, one on one nutrition counseling, and daily exercise sessions.

Why should you enroll your child at Dasmanite?

Being overweight or obese can harm your child in many ways, both physical and psychological. It can make your child more susceptible to multiple chronic diseases later on in life, and it can also affect your child’s confidence.  In addition losing weight is a struggle, so let us help your child by enrolling him/her in our program.

Age Groups: 11-13 and 14-17

What are the dates and fees of the program?
·         Session A : June 16th- July 4th
·         Session B : August 12th-August 29nd

·         Fees: 100KD/ 3 weeks

What are the program timings?
·         9am-12pm ( Sunday to Thursday)

Childhood Obesity prevalence in the Middle East in the 1970s was between 4 and 5% and increased to 17.6% in 2006, with more than one third of all adolescents and children being obese in 2008. At a recent first annual obesity conference in Kuwait, it was disclosed that Kuwait was the fifth most obese nation on Earth, a sign that the vigorous education and other measures adopted against the disease could be working, Kuwait, the year before, occupied the top spot in terms of the prevalence of the disease.

Saudi Arabian Guy Changes Tire While Driving on Two Wheels

A Kuwaiti Doubting Wife’s Virginity - Seeking Divorce

ARAB TIMES May 24: The Personal Status Court presided over by Judge Sultan Mohammad rejected a divorce lawsuit filed by a citizen against his wife because he was unable to accept her behavior and character, and doubted she was a virgin before their marriage.
According to the case files, the citizen requested the court to order his wife to undergo forensic test to determine if she is a virgin as she claims, as a preliminary move towards cancelling their marriage contract, dropping all her legal rights and obligating her to return the dowry she took from him.
He requested to reserve the right to return to her through payment of compensation that will cover the material and emotional damages he sustained during the marriage. He also requested obligating her to pay the legal charges.
The plaintiff (husband) informed the court that he was told before the marriage that she was divorced but still a virgin, as her earlier marriage was not consummated.
However, after he married her, he discovered that she does not perform the five daily prayers and possessed traits that indicated lack of decorum with others.
He also added that when he consummated his marriage with her, he realized that he was duped because she was not a virgin as she had earlier claimed.
Defense Lawyer Abdulmohsen Al- Qattan informed the court that his client was officially divorced from her earlier marriage that lasted for ten years.
He added that the plaintiff admitted consummating the marriage several times, which will make the bid to determine her virginity by the forensics futile

Man Dares Authorities to Deport Arrested Driver - Initially, I found this Idea Quite Gallant but Read on...

KUWAIT TIMES: Interior Ministry officials completely barred a Kuwaiti man from hiring any domestic workers in the future after he refused to hand over the passport of his driver who was to be deported. The Asian man was told he will be deported after he was arrested for jumping a red traffic light – a violation that led to the discovery that he had a record 24 violations against his name – including 15 for jumping the red traffic light. After coming to know about the predicament that his driver faced, the employer headed to the office of the General Traffic Department Director and tried to talk Major General Abdulfattah Al-Ali into pardoning the driver. Even after his appeal was rejected, the Kuwaiti man refused to cooperate and left while remaining adamant about not handing over his driver’s passport. The driver was eventually referred to the deportation department after Maj Gen Al-Ali obtained necessary travel documents from the embassy of the country to which the driver belonged. In the meantime, the Immigration General Department was contacted to blacklist the employer’s name for refusing to hand over his driver’s passport.

Women Almost Carjacked in Kuwait, Second Incident This Week

Ladies, please read this status from one of the BLS members. This happened yesterday in Salmiya. Please take care.

This is what happened to me today......ladies of Kuwait be warned.

I was at traffic lights and this man waved to me and told me to pull over as I had a flat tyre. I did. When I had pulled over he said .... I also had smoke coming from my engine. So I panicked. He told me to take the car to a side street (deserted).....So I did. He then pretended to look at the engine. He then said he wanted to drive the car. I said no so I got back in the car because I had a funny feeling by then because he was acting nervous. He then tried to get the wheel while I was in the car. He tried to grab it over me which was scary! That's when I figured I was having my car 'jacked' so I slammed the door and drove off. I told the police and they told me I was the second woman in two days. They didn't file a report though, which I found frustrating.
Please pass this on just in case someone else is as stupid and gullible as I am. Thank you.

LWDLIK - Becareful people. Glad this lady was okay.

Operation Hope Kuwait Founder Sheryll Mairza Wins GCC Most Inspiring Woman Award

Sheryll Mairza

“God created women with a unique spirit of passion. Passion wielded wisely will harvest great thing God created women with a unique spirit of passion. Passion wielded wisely will harvest great things. Never, ever underestimate the power of passion ~ Sheryll Mairza, Founder, Operation HOPE – Kuwait ~ A Mission of Mercy (Since 2005)

Open Your Eyes

I was out shopping one day, irritated at not being able to find what I was looking (and well aware of my ugly attitude) when my eyes fell upon a pair of sockless feet in a pair of much-worn shoes, which were clearly two sizes too large for their owner. I looked up and what I saw broke my heart. The janitor wore a short-sleeved cotton work jumper, as strikingly threadbare as he was thin. His gauntness left no doubt that he was malnourished, but more startling than this, his eyes. They were devoid of any feeling, windows to his internal brokenness. I had never seen such brokenness in all my life and was immediately overcome by grief. Now ashamed of my ugly determination, rude glares, and sense of entitlement, I fled in tears.

Back in the warmth of our home, I shared my experience with my husband, Husain, who agreed that we could return to the mall to give that man warm clothing and food, and measure his feet for a pair of decent boots. It did not take long to locate him and complete our mission of mercy, yet the mans brokenness would haunt me.

Share the Vision

One year later, as I was busy preparing for Christmas, a heaviness came over me. It was so profound that I stopped planning that day. The next day, I met with the same experience. And the day after that. After three days, I was convinced, by the very real sense of foreboding that prevailed, that someone in my family might be close to dying. Fearfully, I prayed and begged God not to take anyone in my family, asking Him to show me why I felt such foreboding. Immediately, I saw the gaunt, broken-spirited janitor from the furniture mall. Tears flowed again, as they had when I stood face to face with him, and shame washed over me once more.

I resolved to forgo our annual holiday event to serve others in my community instead. Upon this realization, a peace began to replace the anxiety, sadness, and grief. I sent an email to those who usually attended our Open House, explaining that we would serve Kuwait’s neediest population on Christmas Eve instead of having our usual festivities, inviting them to join us. Before nightfall, my inbox was deluged with offers of physical and financial help for the endeavor, greatly encouraging me. Within three weeks, approximately 1,150 male and female laborers working in Kuwait were each outfitted with brand new, rain-resistant coats, hats, gloves, and thick socks. Families, students, and business men joined hands to purchase, pack, and hand-deliver Winter Warmth to each worker, meeting them at their work sites as they boarded their buses at the end of their shift. Operation HOPE – Kuwait had begun.

Seeing Is Believing

The years following our inaugural year witnessed the outreach of OH-Kuwait grow to include tangible support such as toiletries, blankets, bedrolls, and foodstuff to embassy shelters; visits to farmhands in need of shoes, blankets, and food at Kuwait’s borders with Iraq and Saudi Arabia; visits to local jails to deliver blankets and toiletries for detainees; to being the soil for start-up outreaches such as Trash to Treasure and Broken to Beautiful, which offer training for shelter wards in embassies to learn new skills in order to become self sufficient upon repatriation. Both of these visionary outreaches are now autonomous, having been launched with the support they needed from OH – Kuwait.

Operation HOPE – Kuwait, realizes the importance and value of community service and has developed a program for local students called Schools in Action for HOPE, which encourages students involvement through organizing and participating in collection drives for non-perishable foods, clothing, blankets, and shoes. Students, under the direction of their teachers and administrations, often learn to appreciate what they have been blessed with and begin to contemplate their civic responsibilities with new-found hearts of gratitude.

OH-Kuwait also partners with other local outreach programs by providing clothing and toiletries when needed to women and babies in the Illegal Pregnancy Ward as well as men and women at Kuwaits deportation centers.

During the first six years of serving Kuwait’s neediest, OH-Kuwait has been humbly based in a tent located in my family’s yard but with the recent blessing of my Kuwaiti father-in-law, we built HOPE House, complete with adequate storage for all donations received, an area for volunteers to sort and label all bins holding our donations, as well as a bathroom facility for our volunteers to access when necessary. While these may seem basic necessities for any organization to operate, we have managed to serve more than 26,000 needy men, women, and children out of our tent to date.

Most recently, Esthers Attic, a re-sale initiative, has taken root. As donations are sorted, volunteers identify high-end items which can be used more efficiently through funds raised by their resale to the community. Monies earned through Esters Attic, located within the newly-built HOPE House, will be channeled into the ongoing initiatives of Operation HOPE – Kuwait.

Seeing Clearly—the Purpose and the Passion

The acronym HOPE stands for Helping Others Practically & Every Day, without discrimination or disrespect to Christian or Islamic brothers and sisters. Today, our missions goals are simple:

Help individuals on a case-by-case basis as needs arise;

Offer opportunities for families of the local and expatriate community to serve together;

Provide at least 5,000 needy workers with winter warmth each year;

Equip embassy shelters with clothing, blankets, and other basic necessities.

My grandmother and my mother are my own personal philanthropic mentors. Both of these women immigrated to the USA from Germany in 1949, and always extended their hand to others in need, in any way they could, despite their own financial struggles and the prejudices they faced when starting life in their new country. Being reared by such phenomenal women most certainly influenced me to develop into who I am today. I am thankful to the women in my family, who, unlike me, experienced difficulty and sometimes poverty, and yet persevered with a positive attitude to impact their immediate spheres of influence. Following their examples is what drives me to persevere in Kuwait when I am feeling discouraged, overwhelmed, or even useless.

LWDLIK - You are an angel dear Sheryll, thank you for restoring my faith in mankind.

Fibroids, Parties and Tiki Totem PiƱatas

I've had fibroids for years - they definitely interefered with me conceiving babies, may have contributed to me miscarrying, several times, and are the bane of my life. They suck the life out of me. They cause me to bleed so heavily that monthly I'm housebound for 2-3 days. And now to make matters worse my menstrual cycle has shortened and is now every 20 days. I've seen many doctors and they all tell me the same thing when I start menopause they will shrink (they live on estrogen which decreases when women start menopause). But I'm not menopausing I'm still have regular cycles and am about ready to perform my own hysterectomy. Why do they insist to preserve this defunct uterus of mine I'll never know. But if anyone knows a good gyno who can whip out mine I'd be grateful.

So whilst dosing myself up on iron tablets and buscopan - I battle on. No time to be sick have the precious one's luau party and a farewell BBQ this weekend and there's soooo much to be done. I shall be baking up a storm for both but also, just to add to my physical woes, I shall be busy making a tiki totem piƱata. Didn't seem like a big job but has taken over the dining table for the last 3 days and looks as if it needs 2 more days. Eek! Just hope that after all my effort the thing lasts longer than one whack.

Almost sorted I've got the grass skirts, leis, party bags, menu arranged, music downloaded, games organised, decorations ready to go up, and the bamboo stick for the limbo and the poor piƱata.  Will be saying a prayer for the piƱata - though perhaps for the piƱata a quick death might be preferable.

For anyone planning a luau you'll find plenty of pretty leis in Daiso (City Centre, Salmiya Souk), grass skirts were ordered online but have since seen them in Partyland. For homemade pinatas I used Youtube and adapted the box method to make a tiki totem pole with ugly face - you will need to make it 3-4 days in advance to allow each layer of glued paper and paint to dry.

The 7-Minute Workout

A seven-minute exercise regime devised by scientists has been shown to provide as many health benefits as going for a long run and doing  a session of weight training.
The workout requires no more than a wall, a chair and seven minutes of your time.
However the experts say that you must be in pain when performing the regime in order to benefit.
The Seven Minute Workout: The new exercise regime is very prescriptive in terms of the exercises you should do, the order in which you should do them and the length of time spent between each
The Seven Minute Workout: The new exercise regime is very prescriptive in terms of the exercises you should do, the order in which you should do them and the length of time spent between each

The article, entitled High-intensity circuit training using body Weight: Maximum Results With Minimal Investment, is published in the American College of Sports Medicine Health & Fitness.
It outlines 12 exercises that uses the body’s own weight to get the same amount of exercise as doing a long run and session of weight-training in just seven minutes.

Spending hours in the gym may not be needed to reach optimum health with the seven minute workout
Spending hours in the gym may not be needed to reach optimum health with the seven minute workout

‘There’s very good evidence that high-intensity interval training provides many of the fitness benefits of prolonged endurance training but in much less time,’ Chris Jordan, director of exercise physiology at the Human Performance Institute in Orlando, and co-author of the new article, told the New York Times.
Previous research has found that just a few minutes of training at an intensity approaching your maximum capacity produces molecular changes within muscles comparable to those of several hours of running or bike riding.
Interval training, though, requires intervals. The scientists who devised this new workout say that to get the maximum benefits the extremely intense activity must be intermingled with brief periods of recovery.
In the program outlined by Mr. Jordan and his colleagues, this recovery is provided in part by a 10-second rest between exercises. This rest is extended by alternating the muscles used in each  exercise.
During eat set of exercises, the unexercised muscles have a moment to ‘catch their breath’, which makes the order of the exercises important.
The exercises should be performed in rapid succession, allowing 30 seconds for each.
But to get maximum benefits the intensity must hover at around and eight on what they term as the discomfort scale of 1 to 10.
Mr Jordan says that the seven minutes should be unpleasant.
The upside is, after seven minutes, you’re done.
