  1. Consular assistance - hmmm I wonder what that is? I have never known the British Embassy to respond to any emergency here. In January 1998, when Saddam Hussein was amassing his troops on the border with Kuwait, most of the embassy staff had left. In March 2003, the staff kindly left an answering machine for any citizen who had "an emergency", as they had all left the country. It was a case of 'last one out switch the lights off' mentality! The British Embassy only exists to collect rather large fees for simple administrative services for British citizens here in Kuwait.

  2. I've had good and bad experiences. Yes I wish the fees were a lot less. But I was very grateful when we were evacuated from Kuwait in 1990 during the Invasion of Kuwait. The warden system in 1990 worked quite well considering the circumstances. And it is nice to go to the events held there.
Could we send our passports to Petty France, UK for renewal via DHL for a lot less money? Not sure.
Would I like the archaic visa rules to change for spouses, hell yes.
