The Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, left a British hospital on Monday after undergoing routine medical tests which were "successful," an official statement said.

The emir would stay in Britain for a few days on a private visit, state news agency KUNA reported, citing the statement, without providing further details about the type of tests or about his health.

The 82-year-old ruler, who had a heart pacemaker operation in February 2000, left for Britain last week to undergo the tests.

Sheikh Sabah, who ascended to power in January 2006, had successful urinary tract surgery in the United States in August 2007. Five years earlier, he underwent surgery to remove his appendix.

The emir has two sons.

The elder, Sheikh Nasser, is minister for the Emiri Diwan, or royal court, while Sheikh Hamad chairs Kuwait Projects Co., a holding company that manages billions of dollars worth of assets in several Kuwaiti and foreign firms.
