LWDLIK- Sincerest apologies if my dear husband's translation is not 100% he was trying to watch the football at the same time and it didn't go so well after Kuwait got a red card :O(
I googled everywhere trying to find an English translation of the schedule ..Nada! Shame on the English dailies for;
1. Not giving us the programme/schedule in English.
2. Just taunting us with the headline 17th Qurain Cultural Festival and NO more details.
And what the organisers thought by not bothering to put anything out in English is beyond me. I understand that in other countries nothing's printed in Arabic but they don't have almost half the population only speaking Arabic. The Indians are the largest group of nationals here and 'almost' all of them understand English. Large population of Phillipinos etc.. Just look at the sales of the three dailies.. 'Hello!' there is a huge audience.
Okay there are a few lectures and poetry evenings that are in Arabic but the music and dance can be enjoyed by all.
C'mon Kuwait it would be a really nice gesture to inform all the residents of what's going on in the country.

  5. Got an interesting email from an Anon:
    To LWDLIK

I suggest you re-educate yourself about Kuwait before you start throwing suggestive comments. You are in Kuwait and the official language is Arabic.
I beleive when you are in the UK, France or Spain, any local event will be advertised in the language of the country. Unless you are in a tourist office.

Seeing to it that you are most probably married to an Arabic man, it is a shame that you did not put any effort in learning the language or culture although you are in the region and are happily indulging yourself with all the benefits it has to offer (Zero tax, safety, easy living etc.).

You should choose your words wisely next time because as far as anyone is concerned Kuwait does not have any other nationals in this country except Kuwaitis or nationalised people that are married to Kuwaitis. Therefore it is incorrect to classify any expatriate group(that do not possess the Kuwaiti passport) as 'nationals'.

The creator of the blog is a truly resourceful person, that helps nationals and expatriates find leisure outlets in Kuwait and part of her mission is to act as a tourist office and translate event advertisements, without complaining about the lack or quality of event announcements but by rather taking the initiative.

    Well done.

  7. Dear Anon who sent me the email,
Had to remove my previous post and rewrite.
    1. I believe I wrote 'residents' not nationals.
    2. The creator of the blog and the person with whom you took umbrage with are one and the same.
I appreciate you opinions. You are right on several points; I am married to a Kuwaiti, enjoy the benefits and could speak much better Arabic.
My point is that a cultural festival should be shared for all, including foreigners (residents) who can take away with them a little of the rich Kuwaiti culture.
Why wouldn't every Kuwaiti want that?
But thanks for the compliment at the end.

  8. Dear LWDLIK, I am agree with you at 100%, we are living in third millenium, somebody even go to the space and English it is an international language - e v e r y w h e r e. The point is not about which language is an official one but about an Image. Mr. Anon is very fast to reply but very slow to do something by his one. ;) Write a letter to Mark at 248am.com about this funny stuff, he knows how to deal with the guys like this.

  9. Hi LadyStyle, Thank you! Yes I know Mark's dealings with this sort of thing;O) However I happen to believe in free speech and therefore even if I don't like what's being said, I still respect that people have their opinion. And I like having mine too :OD
When I hear/read things like this I think it's possibly coming from someone who is fearful and resents change and progress. If I were to demean Anon's opinion (which is usually the most natural thing to do) then I enforce his/her opinion of foreigners. There are much worse things said in other countries about foreign immigrants. But I do miss the old Kuwait when the old ladies used to come and stroke my siblings' blonde hair and pinch my cheeks. When the old men would share their lovely memories. That wonderful camaraderie we all felt during and after the Gulf war when we all felt so welcome and connected. We all know Kuwait belongs to the Kuwaitis I just think it would be nice if foreigners went back to their own countries with good memories and impressions of the place.
Sadly not everyone gets to experience the warmth and kindness of my in-laws and some of the lovely Kuwaitis here.

  10. Ok I see where Anon may have thought I meant nationals of Kuwait but I hope that is quite clear to most that I mean the largest group of foreign nationals from the same country..India.
