'My Attitude' a cancer sufferer's painful diary blog

A sad, brave journal. My heart breaks for her and all those dealing with this terrible disease.

The Cancer Chant..I Will Rant

Cancer I did not give you the right,
To invade my body and take a bite.
This is my body and with all my might,
I will prevail with one hell of a fight.
To the cancer inside, I will battle and kill.
For that is my body's God given will.
To my cancer, these words I do send.
Your life is short and near the end.

My close friend's dear husband is also battling stage 4 cancer and it has taken its toll on the family.
In both cases their courage and fear are tangible.

How to Grow Your Own Fresh Air

Kamal Meattle used three just three indoor plant species to increase oxygen, filter air, and boost general health at a a New Delhi business park. You too can use them to freshen your indoor space.
Meattle's presentation at the TED 2009 conference details a large-scale success, using thousands of plants for hundreds of workers. In any living or working space, though, the three plants—Areca palm, Mother-in-law's Tongue, and a "Money Plant"—can be used to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, remove organic compounds, and generally filter and freshen the ambient air. A single person looks to need a minimum of 11 total plants, and certain climates with less sunlight could require a bit of hydroponic growing, but Meattle swears by the health, productivity, and atmosphere benefits. Check out the detailed slides from his TED talk:

Air Quality in Kuwait

I'm curious if anyone knows of any studies on the air quality here in Kuwait. The past two days have been hot, humid and what looks like dust in the air. I've noticed I get lethargic and cotton wool headed on these days and not any amount of coffee shifts it. It seems I'm not alone, many of my friends suffer too.
I've tried googling and there was only mention of a localised study in Um Haiman due to industrial pollution but nothing else.
I did hear that the oxygen levels are low during these weather conditions and that's what we're suffering from, a bit like altitude sickness.
Would like to know if anyone else has a theory or facts on the matter.

Elevator buttons ‘40 times dirtier than toilet seats’

London, Sep 24: Researchers have found that a typical elevator button harbours nearly 40 times as many germs as a public toilet seat.
A study carried out in hotels, restaurants, banks, offices and airports found 313 'colony forming units' of bacteria on every square centimetre of lift button.
The equivalent surface area of toilet seat had only eight units.
The bacteria on the lift buttons could include stomach bugs such as E.coli, the researchers say.
'In a busy building, a lift button can be touched by dozens of people who will have come into contact with all kinds of bacteria every hour," the Daily Mail quoted Dr Nicholas Moon, from Microban Europe, which carried out the research for the University of Arizona in the U.S.
'Even if the buttons are cleaned regularly, the potential for the build up of bacteria is high,' he added.

Pecha Kucha Night #6

Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. Pecha Kucha Night is a not-for-profit event, conceived, inspired, and performed solely to strengthen creativity whether it be famous or soon-to-be famous talents.

But as we all know, give a mike to a designer (especially an architect) and you'll be trapped for hours. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each - giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.
Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a demand that seems to be global - as Pecha Kucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 159 cities across the world.

'Visual Pollution in the Middle East' Nuqat 2010- The Biggest Design Conference in Kuwait

Date: October 26-28, 2010.
Location: Gulf University for Science and Technology. Located in Mishref, Kuwait

What is Nuqat?

Nuqat, firstly known as “Nuqat Ala Al Huroof”, started off with one objective in mind and that is “to develop arab creativity on all levels” be it in design, advertising, architecture, fashion, production and all the creative fields.
The first consortium occurred in May 2009 with a focus on Arabic branding and copywriting. This year, the 2010 edition is focusing on Visual Pollution, in which we are trying to integrate several graphic design and architecture disciplines together in the aim to move the bar one level up.

Lectures and Workshops:

With selective talented designers from around the Arab world, an exceptional panel will initiate the debate concerning the theme. To be later followed by workshops given by the speakers.
The event will also host an exhibition of talented local designers and a gallery for student’s work.

2010 Theme: Visual Pollution in the Middle East. The theme compliments our vision for this year’s Nuqat as it will create an open forum to discuss, exchange and debate the ideas revolving around the development of visual communication in the region.

We believe that there are no such bad elements in design there are only bad compositions. By bringing together professionals and students of this field we hope to enrich the cultivation of what can be conceptually average into aesthetically appealing visual

The Indian Chromosome by Dr Farrukh Saleem

Dr Saleem is a Pakistani journalist with  interesting, thought-provoking opinions. This is just one of them from his column http://www.pkcolumns.com/tag/capital-suggestion/ there is another entitled 'Democracy' which is quite brilliant.

The Indian Chromosome by Dr Farrukh Saleem

Twenty-five thousand years ago, haplogroup R2 characterized by genetic marker M124 arose in southern Central Asia. Then began a major wave of human migration whereby members migrated southward to present-day India and Pakistan (Genographic Project by the National Geographic Society on http://www.nationalgeographiccom/). Indians and Pakistanis have the same ancestry and share the same DNA sequence.
Here`s what is happening in India :
The two Ambani brothers can buy 100 percent of every company listed on the Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) and would still be left with $30 billion to spare. The four richest Indians can buy up all goods and services produced over a year by 169 million Pakistanis and still be left with $60 billion to spare. The four richest Indians are now richer than the forty richest Chinese.
In November, Bombay Stock Exchange`s benchmark Sensex flirted with 20,000 points. As a consequence, Mukesh Ambani`s Reliance Industries became a $100 billion company (the entire KSE is capitalized at $65 billion). Mukesh owns 48 percent of Reliance.
In November, comes Neeta`s birthday. Neeta turned forty-four three weeks ago. Look what she got from her husband as her birthday present: A sixty-million dollar jet with a custom fitted master bedroom, bathroom with mood lighting, a sky bar, entertainment cabins, satellite television, wireless communication and a separate cabin with game consoles. Neeta is Mukesh Ambani`s wife, and Mukesh is not India`s richest but the second richest.
Mukesh is now building his new home, Residence Antillia (after a mythical, phantom island somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean). At a cost of $1 billion this would be the most expensive home on the face of the planet. At 173 meters tall Mukesh`s new family residence, for a family of six, will be the equivalent of a 60-storeyed building. The first six floors are reserved for parking. The seventh floor is for car servicing and maintenance. The eighth floor houses a mini-theatre. Then there`s a health club, a gym and a swimming pool. Two floors are reserved for Ambani family`s guests. Four floors above the guest floors are family floors all with a superb view of the Arabian Sea . On top of everything are three helipads. A staff of 600 is expected to care for the family and their family home.
In 2004, India became the 3rd most attractive foreign direct investment destination. Pakistan wasn`t even in the top 25 countries. In 2004, the United Nations, the representative body of 192 sovereign member states, had requested the Election Commission of India to assist the UN in the holding elections in Al Jumhuriyah al Iraqiyah and Dowlat-e Eslami-ye Afghanestan. Why the Election Commission of India and not the Election Commission of Pakistan ? After all, Islamabad is closer to Kabul than is Delhi .
Imagine, 12 percent of all American scientists are of Indian origin 38 percent of doctors in America are Indian 36 percent of NASA scientists are Indians 34 percent of Microsoft employees are Indians and 28 percent of IBM employees are Indians.
For the record: Sabeer Bhatia created and founded Hotmail. Sun Microsystems was founded by Vinod Khosla. The Intel Pentium processor, that runs 90 percent of all computers, was fathered by Vinod Dham. Rajiv Gupta co-invented Hewlett Packard`s E-speak project. Four out of ten Silicon Valley start-ups are run by Indians. Bollywood produces 800 movies per year and six Indian ladies have won Miss Universe/Miss World titles over the past 10 years.
For the record: Azim Premji, the richest Muslim entrepreneur on the face of the planet, was born in Bombay and now lives in Bangalore. India now has more than three dozen billionaires Pakistan has none (not a single dollar billionaire).
The other amazing aspect is the rapid pace at which India is creating wealth. In 2002, Dhirubhai Ambani, Mukesh and Anil Ambani`s father, left his two sons a fortune worth $2.8 billion. In 2007, their combined wealth stood at $94 billion. On 29 October 2007, as a result of the stock market rally and the appreciation of the Indian rupee, Mukesh became the richest person in the world, with net worth climbing to US$63.2 billion (Bill Gates, the richest American, stands at around $56 billion).
Indians and Pakistanis have the same Y-chromosome haplogroup. We have the same genetic sequence and the same genetic marker (namely: M124). We have the same DNA molecule, the same DNA sequence. Our culture, our traditions and our cuisine are all the same. We watch the same movies and sing the same songs. What is it that Indians have and we don't? Indians elect their leaders.

LWDLIK- IMHO it is also that most Indian parents are very focused on giving their kids an excellent education. I've had several Indian maids who spent their last fils putting their kids through school and college. I have dear Indian friends who work split shifts but still spend every available moment ensuring their kids are ferried around in the afternoon to various tutors to help their kids get the best grades in school. Very admirable!
I also like, that although Dr Saleem is a Muslim Pakistani and still lives in Pakistan, he has the belief that he may voice his opinions and observations even if they are unpatriotic, harsh, provocative and/or life-endangering.

Thanks M.

Silsal Ceramics available in Kuwait

Found these and thought they were quite lovely.

For over 20 Years, Silsal Ceramics has been producing traditionally inspired stoneware functional art. Located in Amman, Jordan, Silsal’s passion for this traditional craft is complemented by a dedication to social responsibility as well as cultural enrichment and environmental consciousness.
The designs and shapes featured at Silsal Ceramics are modern renderings inspired by historical traditions. Using stoneware clays, Silsal’s artisans form and then fire each piece at very high temperatures before applying home-mixed, matte glazes from original recipes. Entirely functional, each unique art piece is ideal as a gift, home accessory, or for everyday use; each piece is microwavable, dishwasher safe, and lead-free.
The Silsal Collection features several lines inspired by the Bronze Age, the Mamluk period, other Islamic and regional motifs, and a modern, minimalist line. Ranging from purely decorative, to special use, to everyday home accessory, each item is carefully crafted into an original work of art.

There is a showroom for their lovely range of ceramics located in Qortuba, block 1, street 1, house # 39. You can order via their Facebook page [link] or when you visit the showroom.
